The history
Tanghulu is one of China’s most iconic traditional sweets, especially beloved in northern China. Traditionally made by coating hawthorn berries in a thin, crisp layer of sugar, tanghulu is known for its bright appearance and signature balance of sweetness and tartness.
Its origins are often linked to a legend from the Song Dynasty. According to the story, a court physician prepared hawthorn fruit with sugar for a royal concubine who had lost her appetite. Over time, this simple treat is said to have made its way from the imperial court to everyday street markets, where it became a well-loved snack across generations.
As the years passed, tanghulu grew into more than just a candy fruit skewer. It became part of the charm of traditional street life, especially during the colder months and festive seasons. Today, while modern versions feature strawberries, grapes, mandarins, and other fruits, tanghulu still carries the same spirit of tradition, nostalgia, and simple joy.
